at home....
Alien hype it seems has not only struck the trance scene in a big way, it's also managed to spread like some bizarre form of flu to the non-psychedelically inspired and more respected levels of society.
Try the Planetary Society at Berkeley University in the US for size. Berkeley's SETI project, you see, is using the largest and most sensitive telescope in the world, The Arecibo Radio Telescope in Puerto Rico, to scan outer space for signs of alien life forms! The telescope searches for narrow-bandwidth radio signals, signals which are not found in nature. The discovery of such signals would imply the existence of extra terrestrial life forms! But get this - SETI have designed the project so that it will involve 50, 000 home-based PCs, PCs which could theoretically be your's and mine, or even your grandmothers!

The idea is to divide the vast amount of data that the telescope will pick up into manageable chunks. These chunks will be sent out via the world wide web to the first 50, 000 volunteers who visit their website from across the globe. SETI will provide each volunteer with an extremely hi-tech screen-saver that will analyse the data while they send a fax, have a nap or even go to lunch!!! Basically, whenever you're not using your computer, it will join the search for aliens!!!
|
If you're a part of the project there's a small but captivating possibility that your computer will be the one to detect the faint murmur of a civilization beyond Earth. Imagine, you're at work just off taking a whizz and you return to your computer only to discover that you, out of all the people on the earth have made first contact with the little green men!!!!! Like wow, man, that's some seriously heavy shit. Totally cosmic.
It all goes to show that trip heads and scientists have more in common than you would have thought. Insanity (even if it is momentary and chemically-inspired) is closer to genius than is generally assumedàààààààHmmmm. Yes, quiteààà.Let's just hope they find something.
